Student Results

Thousands of people are now leading more independent lives as the result of our adult literacy program. Last year alone, our literacy tutors served more than 280 English as a second langauge and adult reading students with more than 5,000 hours of tutoring.

About 80 students said that they are contributing more to their families.

  • Four purchased homes.
  • Some were able to fill out the forms needed to enroll their children in school.
  • Some met with teachers and could discuss their child’s progress.
  • Some volunteered at school.
  • Some helped their children with homework.
  • Some played English games with their children.
  • Many read books to their children.
  • Some learned budgeting skills.
  • Some learned how to write checks.
  • Some learned how to make phone calls and how to navigate phone menus.
  • Some improved their writing skills so they could write notes and letters.

 

About 60 students said that they are more productive at work.

  • 16 enrolled in community college.
  • 2 completed TOEFL, a test of English language fluency most often used to enroll in university.
  • One completed a paralegal certificate.
  • Some have gained new jobs.
  • Some received promotions.
  • Some gained work-related skills that made them more valuable to their employer.
  • Some received praise from bosses.


About 40 students said that they are more engaged in their community.

  • One became a U.S. citizen.
  • Some have the confidence to talk with neighbors.
  • Some have the courage to shop by themselves.
  • Some are more active at church.
  • Many have applied for library cards.
  • Many use the library regularly.
  • Some have registered their children for library story times.
  • Some have expressed their opinion by writing letters to the editor of their local newspaper.
