The first question is about literacy – helping people gain the basic skills to succeed in life. The second question is about volunteerism – committing time to a worthwhile cause. The third question is about leadership – the ability to steer to a better future. These are the qualities we seek in our fellow Board members.

Our Board of Directors intends to broaden the organization’s impact with a number of new strategic initiatives, but we need to grow the Board to get the right talent in place.

Just so there is no confusion, we are a “working board.” This means that we don’t just show up at meetings and give opinions. While the opinions are important, we also need the follow-up that turns thought into action.

While serving on the Board does not demand a lot of time, it does demand dedicated time. All Board members are expected to minimally contribute:

• 2 hours per month to the regular meeting of the Board
• up to 2 hours per month on standing committee matters
• occasional chunks of time around specific fundraising activities.
